THE SILENCE OF THE LAMB (1991), HANNIBAL (2001) and RED DRAGON (2002)

This trilogy of movie is one series everyone should watch to see the magic in the acting of Anthony Hopkins. No doubt the first, The Silence of the Lamb was the best among three as it normally happens with trilogies. Hannibal was an average movie but the Red Dragon again brought back the series to the past glory. Anthony Hopkins has done an excellent job in acting and deserves applause. Though the three movies have been directed by different directors the movie seems to have some continuation from the past. Also each of the movies is unique in itself as there is a different case to unravel every time. This is a series of deep suspense and action movies which will keep you wondering what next. My rating for the series is 75% good.

SNATCH (2000)

Written and Directed by Guy Ritchie this movie is one hell of an action crime movie. Watch this movie to hear the weird English accent of Brad Pitt who plays the role of a bare knuckle boxer. Movie also stars Jason Statham who plays the role a boxing promoter and is known as the ‘Turkish’. The movie is about a chase for the priceless 86 carat diamond among boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers, and supposedly Jewish jewelers. The whole mess that’s created brings the action an also comedy in the movie. My rating for the movie is 70% good.

eXISTENZ (1999)

Where should I start, I have no idea what the story writer of this movie had in his mind and what he wanted to tell. Direction is also not so great to talk about same as the story of the movie. The movie is about a game designer; Jennifer Jason Leigh on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee; Jude Law to determine if the game has been damaged or not. It was hard to understand the depth behind the movie as the directed tried to complicate things till the end of the movie. My rating for the movie is 55% good.

FROM PARIS WITH LOVE (2010)

Directed by Pierre Morel this movie is an action adventure of special agents against the radical terrorist. John Travolta plays the role of Charlie Wax who comes to Paris for a special assignment when he is contacted by an employee, Jonathan Rhys in the office of the American ambassador. The mission is to stop the terrorist attack in the city. Movie has many flaws in its story and direction, many of the scenes are irrelevant for example the ending scene when Travolta and Jonathan stop to play a match of chess just before their plane is about to leave. My rating for the movie is 55% good

GET SMART (2008)

Dwayne Johnson “The rock” starrer, Get Smart is a rib tickling spy comedy bound to rule the box office. Not to forget Steve Carell, Agent 86 in the movie has lot to offer with his experience in comedy. The movie is about Agent 86 competing against the more competent defaulter spy Agent 23 and the villain KAOS. Movie is funny because not so smart Agent 86 tries to prove his worth to the agency and in doing so fails most of the time. Anna Hathaway also plays a role of the beautiful spy Agent 99 which is also adds to the comedy as she is suppose to be one of the best Agents in the agency. Directed by Peter Segal movie is a mix of action, adventure and comedy. MY rating for the movie is 65% good.

FLYBOYS (2006)

The movie is about few American soldiers who volunteered to fight for the French military before America entered the world war. The list of actors is long and everyone has put in efforts to create the war like impact for the movie. Directed by Tony Bill movie has many flaws when he has tried to portray a love story in between the war otherwise the movie is worth the time and money. One of the American fighters, actor James Franco stands out for his acting among all the other actors. War movies mostly depend on heavy backdrops and costly sets and also dialogues that motivate, but this movie has some drawbacks in these areas. My rating for this movie is 65% good.

FUNNY PEOPLE (2008)

As the title of the movie suggests it is a comedy and well if there is Adam Sandler it has to be funny. Written and Directed by Judd Apatow revolves around the life of a standup comedian Adam Sandler who has been wrongly diagnosed with a fatal disease. On the way he meets a partner or rather a personal secretary for himself and also tries to get back to his lost love and family. Though it’s a long movie but the funny moments in the movie keep you intact with the story line. Seth Rogan the personal aid for Adam Sandler in the movie has been convincing and deserves brownie points for his role. My rating for the movie is 60% good.

FULL METAL JACKET (1987)

Well I think you will not find a better movie on Army training and War. The movie showcase the hurdles that soldiers come across before becoming a Marine and also depict the hurdles they face during the war. Written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, Full Metal Jacket is one of the best movies on Vietnam War. The movie is about a pragmatic U.S. Marine who observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has had on his fellow Marine recruits during and before the Vietnam War. Some of the scenes in the movie are really touching and challenge your mind to think upon the complexity of the situation during War. My rating for the Movie is 85% good.

RESCUE DOWN (2006)

Written and directed by Werner Herzog this movie is based on true events in the life of Dieter Dengler. Excellent acting by Christian Bale multiplies the thrill of watching the movie. With amount of physical transformation done by him for this movie makes him one of the good actors alive in Hollywood. The movie is about an US fighter pilot who gets captured by enemies in Laos after his plane crashes during Vietnam War. His struggle and survival after being captured makes the movie worth the watch. If ever you get a chance do not miss this movie as this is one of the good movies on prison escapes. My Rating for the movie is 80% good.

Couples Retreat (2009)

One good thing about this movie is that, the music for the movie is given by A.R Rehman. Rest the movie is really funny at times but overall it is an average movie to spend time upon. All the couple are typical in their characterization and depict any couple in America hence bring out the comedy. The movie is about a couple who are worried about their troubled marriage and decide upon going on a trip to tropical island resort along with their four couple friends and actually land up finding true love. The different situations that happen during their holiday bring out the comedy in the movie. My Rating for this movie is 55%good.

RAGING BULL (1980)

This is Robert De Niro’s best performance ever in a Hollywood movie. Robert De Niro went on to win an Oscar for best actor in lead role for this movie. This movie also got an Oscar for Best film editing (Thelma Schoonmaker). All the bowing fans should watch this movie and cherish the richness of the role played by Robert De Niro. Movie is an autobiography about the middle weight champion Jake La Motta. Not to forget Joe Pesci as supporting actor in the role of trainer and friend of La Motta. Movie is about the life and struggle of the boxing legend in and out of the ring. My rating for the movie is 80% good.

BOLT (2008)

Well if you are a dog person this is one movie that should not slip out of your hands. Good animation tricks puts, Bolt just below Wall-E for the animation movie of the year 2008. The story is also a strong point about this movie as different characters indulge in bringing out the message. The movie is about a star dog of a fictional sci-fi/action show that believes his powers are real. At the same time he embarks on a cross country journey to save his co-star from a threat he believes to be real. The combination of the three characters Bolt, Mitten and Rhino form an interesting team which is worth the watch. My rating for the movie is 70% good.

WALL-E (2008)

Coming from the house for Pixar Animation Studio and Walt Disney Pictures this is a gem of an animation movie with a beautiful story. It also went on to win the Oscar for the Best Animation movie of the year so here I rest my case. The story is about an adventure of a waste collecting robot that falls in love with a future robot and embarks upon a journey to the outer space to meet the robot. And during the course of his journey ends up bringing human habitation back to earth. The characters in the movie are very lively and instantly relate to human emotions. Especially the WALL-E character in the movie is really lovable and has been able to bring out all human emotions, all praises to the animators. My rating for the movie is 80% good

STREET KINGS (2008)

This movie is about the age old concept of good cop against bad cops. Actors Keanu Reaves and Forest Whitaker both deserve applause for their performance in the movie. The movie has good action stunts with loads of drama to offer to audience. The story is about Tom Ludlow is a veteran LAPD cop who finds evidence about the execution of a fellow officer, he is forced to go up against the cop culture he's been a part of his entire career, ultimately leading him to question the loyalties of everyone around him. Though people might have different opinion about the ending of the movie but all in all it is good movie to watch. My rating for the movie is 70% good.

A SERIOUS MAN (2009)

This movie is black comedy at its best. Written and Directed by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, movie is a black comedy drama centered on Larry Gopnik, a Midwestern professor who watches his life unravels through multiple sudden incidents. Hence he goes on a journey to find answers from different sources for his miss-happenings. The good thing about the movie is its ending as it is a different from conventional endings. Actor Michael Stuhlbarg has done a good job while depicting the character of Professor Larry Gopnik. My rating for this movie is 70% good.

A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988)

Directed by Charles Crichton this movie is all about comedy, crime, love and deception. Being a late 80’s movie it has all the spices of a good movie in the right amount rather I would say it is a typical Bollywood movie concept. The story is about an armed robbery undertaken by four very different individuals who then try to double-cross each other for the looted money. Among the four robbers actress Jamie Lee Curtis stands out with her performance and screen presence. My rating for this movie is 70% good

SLING BLADE (1996)

Written and Directed by Billy Bob Thornton this is a gem of movie. And not forget Billy Bob Thornton is also the lead actor for this movie. Also Billy Bob Thornton went on to win an Oscar for best writing and screenplay for this movie. I have to say He has really done a great job not only in terms of screenplay but also in his acting as lead role of a mentally challenged person. The movie is about a mentally challenged child who is thrown into correction facility after he killed his mother and her lover with a sling blade. The story then takes an interesting turn when he is released to start his new life. Here he meets new faces and makes a good 14 yr old friend who reminds him of his childhood and so on…… My rating for this movie is 80% good.

STAND BY ME (1986)

There are very few good movies of childhood friends and this movie beats it all. Though the movie is bit old the story behind the movie is still fresh and touching. The movie is about four friends who go on a journey to find a body of a missing child so that they become famous by getting their photographs clicked for daily newspaper. And on this journey they have some very interesting moments which connect to everyone’s childhood in some way. All four friends are typical in their character and I am sure that you would have had at least one such friend among your childhood friends. Movie also highlights the dilemma about life/death in the minds of different generations. My rating for this movie is 75% good.

BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA (2007)

This movie does seem a fantasy movie from its cover and title but there is more to it. A beautiful story about friendship and reminisce of school days. The movie brings out few of the most touching scenes in the story which keeps the audience spell bound throughout the movie. Both the child actors have done a good job and deserve applause. The movie is about two friends whose lives are changed after discovering their power of imagination and thereby discovering TERABITHIA. My rating for the movie is 75%good

HARD CANDY (2005)

Though the title has an interesting pull for the audience the story is as much thought provoking. All praises to Ellen Page for her superb acting and admirable screen presence. The movie is about 14-year old girl meeting a charming 32-year old photographer on the Internet. After few conversations over the internet girl suspects the photographer of being a pedophile, she goes to his home in an attempt to expose him and so on. Well direction by David Slade is also a plus point for watching this movie. My rating for this movie is 75% good.

FOREVER STRONG (2008)

Well I have always been a big fan of sports movie and this one sure is one of those good sports movies I have watched. The movie is about a talented-but-troubled rugby player who must play against the team his father coaches at the national championship. A lot of drama goes behind the story which is worth knowing for better appreciation of the movie. Though the direction lags at many important situations in the movie which I would say could be because of cost issues. At last I would say a good sports movie to watch in your free time. My rating for this movie is 70% good.

EAGLE EYE (2008)

This movie is a Si-Fi, Man verse Machine movie which will surely entertain you and keep you at the edge of your seats. Directed by D. J. Caruso this action flick is worth a watch as his efforts are virtually noticed at every scene. The movie is about two strangers thrown together by a mysterious phone call from a woman they have never met. Threatening their lives and family, she pushes these two strangers into a series of increasingly dangerous situations, using the technology of everyday life to track and control their every move. My rating for this movie is 70% good.

BRUNO (2009)

Sacha Baron Cohen is a masterpiece in himself and the well of confidence he shows performing the outrageous scenes is mind blowing. Well you do not need any level of IQ for watching this movie; everything that’s bad about US is in this movie. Directed by Larry Charles this movie offers only nonsense comedy or a very high level of comedy with many may not be able to digest. The movie is about a Gay star, yet to be celebrity trying to make things happen for himself in Hollywood. Please keep your brains outside the movie hall before watching this movie. My rating for this movie is 60% good.

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993)

This movie highlights a nice love story about a small town guy and a city girl. Tom hanks play the role of the small town recently widowed guy who has a son and they have moved into a new city. One day his son calls the radio talk show in an attempt to find his father a partner and from there the love story begins. Directed by Nora Ephron this movie is worth a watch if you haven’t seen a romantic movie lately. Well my golden rule says if it is a Tom Hanks movie it has to be good. My rating for this movie is 65% good.

ROAD TO PERDITION. (2002)

This movie offers you Tom Hanks in action, as a Hitman and then a bank robber against his boss. This movie went on to win an Oscar for best Cinematography. The movie is about a Hitman played by Tom Hanks who is caught in a web of events after his son sees him what he does for living. This results into testing of tom Hanks loyalty and later urges him to rebel against his boss which makes him into a bank robber. Tom Hanks has played his role convincingly and has gone under the skin of the character. All an all this is a good movie to spend your time and money on. My rating for the movie is 80% good.

Inkheart (2008)

This movie somehow did not make any sense to me as the story was bit complicated to understand and had many flaws in direction. Though the director has tried to tell the story but I feel this movie could have been made in parts so that the audience understands the story bit by bit. The story is about a young girl discovers her father has an amazing talent to bring characters out of their books and must try to stop villain from destroying them all. I can’t do better than that if you are still confused watch the movie. I could never understand how Brendan Fraser always land up in some out of box magical movies. My rating for the movie is 50% good.

CRIMSON TIDE (1995)

This movie I would say showcases Denzel Washington at his best. Directed by Tony Scott portrays a story about a US nuclear missile submarine, the Alabama on a mission to combat the rebel Russian forces who had gained control over Russian nuclear weapons. Denzel Washington plays a role of a New X.O of the ship with ship’s captain Ramsey played by Gene Hackman. There are many issues that turn up on the event of firing of the nuclear missiles between the X.O and the Captain and so. The movie is a real thriller and keeps you on your toes till the last moment. My rating for this movie is 75% good.

CAST AWAY (2005)

If you haven’t seen this movie my advices to you is leave whatever you are doing and go watch this movie. First time when I saw Cast Away I couldn’t stop wondering if that situation was really possible and what would have I done in Tom Hanks place. Directed beautifully by Robert Zemeckis this movie is value for time and money. This surely is Tom Hank’s best performance in the lead role. Movie is about a person who gets stranded in an island for many years after a plane crash and how he copes with life alone in the island. My rating for this movie is 80% good.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (2007)

This musical directed by Julie Taymor seems to have been a music tribute to the great Beatles Band. All the songs in the movie are from Beatles and beautifully go along with the movie. The movie is about an artist who comes to US to find his dad and gets caught in a string of events from Vietnam War to falling in love. There are also few other parallel love stories in the movie and movie tries to relate one character with the other in an emotional way. Jim Sturgess, the artist has done a good job and fits the character well in a convincing manner. All the Beatles fan do watch the movie as this one is a real musical treat for your eyes and ears. My rating for this movie is 70% good.

AVATAR (2009)

Directed by James Cameron this movie had to be special, with its ground breaking special effects in 3D. Though the story is not much to speak about, goes as same age old act of one person against many, saving the other civilization and thereby bringing peace and harmony. Well the depiction of character does seem to attract lot of attention as lot of works has been gone into differentiating one civilization from the other. The 3D effect is amazing and one should not miss this movie at any cost as this one is value for money. Though it lost out to Hurt Locker in the Oscar race but 3 Oscar’s does emphasis my point of movie being worth watching. My rating for this movie is 90% good.

APOCALYPSE NOW (1979)

Being a late 70’s movie I would say this movie was way ahead of its time and personally I feel this is the best movie made on Vietnam War till date. Written and Directed by Francis Ford Coppola it had to be a good movie. Actor Martin Sheen has done an excellent job but the real cake goes to Marlon Brando though a shorter appearance but a powerful one. This movie went on to win 2 Oscars so if ever you get a chance do not miss this movie and do remember it’s a late 70’s movie before judging it. I do not want to spoil the fun of watching the movie for you by telling you the plot but just remember it is a war movie and Marlon Brando is suppose to be a local deity. My rating for this movie is 80% good.

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU (1999)

Directed by Gil Junger this movie is a college flick revolving around a romance. Though nothing new to offer but has few good moments and few good dialogues to take home. Late Heath Ledger stands out for his acting same as Julia stiles stands out in the opposite role. Movie is all about high school, romance, parties, friends/family and fun all the while. I would say a good movie to watch with your friends on a lazy afternoon. My rating for the movie is 65% good

WALK-HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY (2007)

Being a spoof movie is always hard to attract large crowd and grab the attention of the viewer. To a great extent this movie has been able to be funny and at the same time managed to attract the attention of viewers. If you haven’t seen the movie Walk the Line this movie might not ring bells or seem funny. Though the movie is a spoof on many musicians but mostly revolves around the life history of Johnny Cash. Actor John C. Reilly is really funny in the movie and has given his best shots for the movie. My rating for this movie is 65% good.

TROPIC THUNDER (2008)

Acted, Written and Directed by Ben Stiller this is an all time action comedy in my list. Just keep your brains aside while watching this movie as more you think less you enjoy the movie. Ben Stiller is the comedy king here but I do have my personal favorite as Jack Black (for comedy) as he also shares the pie in being the king of comedy. Storyline: For different reason a group of actors end up being in the drug smugglers camp, thinking they are portraying soldiers in a big budget movie but end up being the real heroes. My rating for this movie is 70% good

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994)

All praises for this movie as there hasn’t been a better movie till date. Story about two individuals who are in jail for different reasons become good friends and find solace and finally redemption. No doubt this movie was nominated for 7 Oscars and won many others. Directed by Frank Darabont movie showcases many faces of lives of the two individuals and there is no other story that has been narrated as good as this one. Actors Tim Robins and Morgan Freeman deserve a standing ovation for their superb acting in the movie. Do not miss this movie at any chance otherwise you would be missing a whole lot of Hollywood. My Rating for this movie is 95% good.

THE REBOUND (2009)

Written and Directed by Bart Freundlich, this movie has a modern day touch to it and has many things to offer. All though story line is bit common but screenplay is done beautifully. The story is about a single mom in New York who falls in love with a much younger neighbor and the how other complications creep into their relationship. Well I do appreciate the acting done by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha both deserves applause as both of them stand out in the movie. My Rating for this movie is 60% good.

THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (2002)

Well you may not find a better movie on jail escape or better story line. Movie has many good things to offer such as superb acting done by all the actors and the direction is also done beautifully. It’s a story about a person who is wrongfully accused and sentenced to a deserted jail and then he escapes from jail after many years and take his revenge. All though it is a long movie but it’s worth the pain. I do have some problem with the costumes and few of the sets as they spoil the feeling of eighteenth century movie. But do not undermine the movie it’s very powerful and grabs your attention throughout the movie. My Rating for this Movie is 80% good

TAKING LIVES (2004)

I had never thought Angelina Jolie and Ethan Hawke could end up doing such a movie. There is nothing new to offer in this movie, same old murder mystery story with no suspense as such. The direction and the story line have many shortcomings as many scenes do not justify the storyline. Though the one thing to take away from this movie is the hot sensual scene between Angelina Jolie and Ethan Hawk or rather I would say that’s what I remember about this movie. My Rating for this movie is 50% good.

LUCKY YOU (2007)

Casino, Gambling, Rivalry, Tournament and Drew Barrymore, that’s what I remember about this movie. LEATHERHEADS (2008)

You would have never known George Clooney could act and direct in the same movie and that too, a sports movie. The movie speaks about the early 1920’s when the American football was just beginning to grab the national attention and how a person (George Clooney) single handedly forms a team and goes on to win the national cup. The other thing to watch out in the movie is the acting done by RenĂ©e Zellweger, she has always given more than hundred percent in most of her movies and this one sure is one of them. A touch of romance and rivalry alongside the American football gives the edge to the movie over other sports movies. My rating for the movie is 65% good.

IT’S ALL GONE PETE TONG (2004)

To begin with this movie is about a true life story of a musician and the change of events in his life. This is a must watch movie for all the party goers in town. Frankie Wilde played by Paul Kaye has done total justice to the character by his superb acting. Though many might call this movie a tragic comedy but for me it was a mixture of drugs, music and love. Being a true story surly grabs your attention and makes you understand the troubled life of most of the musicians. Frankie Wilde once was on top of his career and then there was a sudden downfall due to drugs and loss of hearing. But that’s not it; there is the comeback of the king of night clubs with his smashing hits, while still being deaf. The weird part is after all this he disappears in the end and still hasn’t been found. My Rating for the movie is 75% good.
